ART AT MERCY

Cultural Collections

Mercy patients, residents, staff and visitors enjoy works of art that are managed and maintained by the Mercy Archive.  We also care for photographs and documents from Mercy’s history.

We carefully manage donations of art, arranging placement and ongoing protection of paintings, drawings and other artwork that are displayed in Mercy’s hospitals, aged care homes and community facilities.

We understand that going to hospital, either as a patient or visitor can be a nervous and sometimes frightening experience. We want to make our facilities as comfortable and welcoming as possible.

Art has been shown in clinical studies to benefit patients and residents of care facilities:
  • Art can reduce stress and anxiety before, during and after medical procedures
  • Art can improve recovery times and lessen the need for strong drugs for patients recovering from major surgery
  • Art can enrich the cultural experience of our community and convey unique aspects of Mercy’s caring mission
Eventually, we hope that everyone who enters a Mercy hospital or aged care facility will be able to enjoy the benefits of art.

Naturally we focus our resources on patient care - we don’t have an annual ‘art budget'. We rely upon generous supporters to donate artworks for the benefit of the community. Our long-term goal is to have art in all patient rooms and public spaces throughout Mercy. With your help, we can achieve this goal.
