GESTATIONAL DIABETESA high blood sugar level during pregnancy is known as gestational diabetes. Risks for women with gestational diabetes include high blood pressure, pre-eclampsia and foetal death during the last four to eight weeks of pregnancy. They may also have very large babies - and an increased likelihood of requiring a caesarean section - which can increase the risk of infection and prolong recovery time.
At birth, babies whose mothers had gestational diabetes are at higher risk of breathing problems. As they get older, these children are also at higher risk of obesity and diabetes.
The McAuley Foundation aims to support Mercy Hospital for Women's Gestational Diabetes Study, the objective of which is to detect an expectant mother's predisposition toward developing Type 2 diabetes as early as six weeks into her pregnancy. Such a diagnosis would enable the mother to prevent the onset of diabetes through appropriate lifestyle changes.
