PREVENTION OF PREMATURE BIRTH

Of the 60,000 babies born in Victoria last year, more than 7% were born prematurely. A long-term study being undertaken at Mercy Hospital for Women in Melbourne, aims to establish the causes, indicators and prevention of pre-term labour - the major cause of death and adverse health outcomes of babies.

Mercy Hospital for Women is one of only three in Victoria offering neonatal intensive care.

The Special Care Nursery cares for the tiniest, sickest and most vulnerable premature babies born each year. The McAuley Foundation believes the importance of this research cannot be understated: saving just one baby in late pregnancy will give a full life to a person who will contribute to society for perhaps 80 years.
